Juan (Rudolph Valentino), the son of a poor widow in Seville, goes against his mother's wishes and pursues a career as a matador. He rapidly gains national prominence, marries his childhood sweetheart Carmen and begins bullfighting in the finest venues. Juan's increased popularity brings him to the attention of the Marquis' daughter Dona Sol, and he falls in love with her. A bullfighting accident causes him to return home to recuperate under the tender care of his loving wife. When Juan is recovered and returns to the ring for the first time after his accident, a momentary distraction may spell ruin for the handsome matador.
